6 Reasons to Visit the Finger Lakes — New York’s Underrated Gem

Julie and I have visited the Finger Lakes region in New York many times, but it wasn’t until recently that we stopped to appreciate just how special it really is. My parents always raved about it, and as it turns out — they were right. From scenic beauty to small-town charm, there are plenty of reasons to visit the Finger Lakes.

Whether you’re planning your first trip or returning for another adventure, this guide highlights six standout reasons why this underrated destination should be on your travel list.

What Are the Finger Lakes?

The Finger Lakes are a group of eleven lakes nearby that run north and south in northern New York. On a map, they resemble long, skinny fingers.

Often a cliche, but in this case, the region genuinely offers excellent relaxation and recreation opportunities amid a beautiful setting.

Stunning Natural Beauty

The tranquil, blue lakes nestle between gently rolling hills, providing a majestic landscape. Scenic drives abound throughout the peaceful countryside as you bask in the panoramic views.

If you prefer moving water, the region teems with cascading waterfalls. Watkins Glen State Park, located south of Seneca Lake, is the state’s gem with its 19 waterfalls and 200-foot shale cliffs. It regularly appears on prestigious lists as one of America’s most beautiful parks.

You will discover many other waterfalls, including the 215-foot single-drop Taughannock Falls.

Julie and I were astounded when we stumbled upon Hector Falls, a roadside waterfall. It starts about 50 feet above the road and cascades below in two more drops, totaling 165 feet.

The lakes yield excellent boating, swimming, paddling, and fishing opportunities. Hiking is popular due to the region’s wonderful state parks and abundant waterfalls. There are also plenty of biking trails. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing take center stage in winter.

A Paradise for Wine Lovers and Foodies

Suppose you prefer to relax while admiring the scenery. The Finger Lakes proudly boasts over 130 wineries, multiple wine trails, and year-round wine-related events.

You will find everything from well-established names to small, family-owned gems. Seneca Lake has the most wineries for those who prefer to visit multiple wineries but limit the windshield time. Tap through the slideshow below to discover the top Seneca Lake wineries worth sipping your way through.

Many local eateries dot the lakes, offering tasty dishes with fresh, regional ingredients. The area offers everything from farm-to-table restaurants to lakeside dining. Whether you seek a charcuterie board to pair with your wine or a new culinary experience, the Finger Lakes will not disappoint.

Keuka Lake has an emerging brewery scene for those who prefer craft beers.

Julie and I hiked the trails and chased waterfalls early in the day. Then, we sipped a glass of wine and relaxed with views of sprawling vineyards. It felt like a reward after a fun day of exploring.

Charming Small Towns

Small towns confetti the lakes and warmly welcome you with a friendly vibe and a slow pace, the polar opposite of New York City. You will discover historic architecture, quaint shops, art galleries, and farmers’ markets.

Julie and I loved Ithaca, home of Cornell University, an Ivy League school. The university has a fantastic botanical garden. There are nearby waterfalls and one of the best farmers’ markets we have encountered anywhere.

History and Culture

The Finger Lakes offer more than natural beauty and award-winning Rieslings. You can explore the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls and Waterloo. The area also harbors Harriet Tubman National Historical Park and the Seward House Museum.

For those who seek a unique experience, visit the Corning Museum of Glass, where you can watch live glassblowing demonstrations or make your own project with the help of an experienced glassworker.

Year-Round Destination
