DID YOU KNOW? Facts on the 63 National Parks

Since 1916, the National Park Service (NPS) has been responsible for preserving and caring for America’s national parks.

The National Park System comprises 425 national park sites, spanning over 84 million acres.

Just 63 sites in the system carry the National Park designation.

The oldest national park is Yellowstone National Park. It was established in 1872.

The newest of which is New River Gorge in West Virginia. It was redesignated as a national park in 2020.

More than 15 billion people have visited U.S. National Parks since 1904, including more than 300 million in 2022.

The biggest national park is Wrangell-St Elias in Alaska. It covers more than eight million acres.

The smallest national park is the Gateway Arch National Park in Missouri, which encompasses 192.83 acres.

California has the most national parks (nine).

Alaska is second with eight, and Utah is third with five.
