9 National Parks That Shine in Fall: Where to See Peak Foliage Across the U.S.

Fall is our favorite time of year—hands down. Julie and I absolutely love fall travel. Our hearts race just talking about fall foliage. That’s why we’re thrilled to share this roundup of the best national parks for fall foliage.

These aren’t just our personal picks—they’re backed by science. A 2024 report from onX Maps used satellite imagery and a “Deciduous Tree Layer” to identify parks with the highest density of color-changing trees. We’ve explored six of the nine parks on their list, and we’re excited to share what makes each one special.

Whether you’re chasing fall colors in national parks, planning a scenic road trip, or simply looking for peaceful trails and wildlife encounters, these are some of the top parks for autumn travel.

Peak foliage typically arrives mid to late October in most of these parks, though exact timing varies year to year. For 2025, forecasts from SmokyMountains.com suggest slightly earlier color in the Northeast and Midwest.

The Smokies in fall? Like heaven. Rushing streams, peaceful forests, and painted mountain ridges—it’s a sensory overload in the best way. My heart swells just reminiscing. The park’s elevation range means you’ll find color from late September through early November, with mid-to-late October being prime.

Shenandoah is one of the easiest national parks to visit in autumn. Skyline Drive runs the length of the park with a slow speed limit and dozens of overlooks. We encountered deer on our last fall visit—so take it slow and stay alert. If you’re physically able, explore on foot. The park offers plenty of easy hikes with fantastic views.

Acadia blends rugged coastal shores with lush forests. In autumn, the seasonal hues give the park a whole new vibe. Bike rides on the Carriage Roads cut through peaceful forests ablaze with color. Between the lighthouse, rocky coasts, painted forests, and Bar Harbor cuisine, it’s a delightful escape.

Don’t assume Mammoth Cave is only about the cave. Yes, it’s the main draw, but the forested trails are a hidden gem—especially in fall. We loved the cave, but found the hiking trails a refreshing escape with very few visitors. It’s a quiet way to savor the season.

We love Indiana Dunes for its diverse ecosystems and excellent birding. Lake Michigan and the rolling dunes are always pretty, but the forests steal the spotlight in autumn. It’s a short-lived show—but one you don’t want to miss.

Remote and rugged, Isle Royale is one of the least-visited national parks—but it’s a hidden gem for fall color and wildlife. While we haven’t explored it firsthand yet, it’s high on our list. The park’s dense forests and quiet trails come alive in autumn, and moose sightings are common during the shoulder season. If you’re looking for solitude and seasonal beauty, Isle Royale delivers.

Fall brings golden aspens and fiery maples, with moose and other wildlife often spotted near the shoreline. If you’re drawn to quiet trails and animal encounters, this is one of the top parks for autumn travel.

I’ve visited New River Gorge a couple of times—before it earned national park status—and it left a lasting impression. The whitewater rafting is top-notch and an absolute blast. In the fall, the gorge transforms into a canvas of color. Photos of the cliffs and valleys ablaze in foliage are stunning, and we can’t wait to return and breathe in the scene ourselves. Whether you’re hiking, rafting, or simply soaking up the views, this park deserves a spot on your autumn travel list.
