Guests walk through Darkmoor in Epic Universe's Dark Universe world

Dark Universe at Epic Universe: Attractions, Dining & Lore

Dark Universe is one of the five themed worlds in Universal Orlando Resort’s newest park, Epic Universe. Its inspiration comes from Universal’s classic monster films like Dracula and Frankenstein. Most theme parks romanticize fairy tales and heroes. What I love most about Dark Universe in Epic Universe is that it worships anti-heroes and monsters.

The Epic Universe monster land is spooky, immersive, and unexpectedly thrilling. It is a breath of fresh air in the theme park industry, something travelers have been thirsting for. I’m starting to sound like Dracula already.

Dark Universe in Epic Universe is a must-see if you enjoy Gothic horror, science fiction, or legendary monsters. Even if you do not hunger for these dark elements, you will appreciate the world’s novel approach and immersive details.

Epic Universe nestles at 1001 Epic Boulevard, Orlando, FL 32819, 4 miles south of Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

Celestial Park is the hub world, granting guests access to the four other themed worlds based on intellectual properties. From Celestial Park’s main entrance, head to the left side of the park. You will pass the Super Nintendo World portal along the way. Continue walking along the main path until you find the Dark Universe Portal.

Where to Stay

We stayed at Universal Stella Nova Resort. The modern hotel features cosmic theming and offers shuttle service to Epic Universe. While the shuttle service is nice, Julie and I walked to the park within 5 minutes. Stella Nova is clean, comfortable, and convenient. Although considered a prime value hotel, it has a pool, a game room, a fitness center, restaurants, and more.

Want a closer look? Read our full Universal Stella Nova Resort review for photos, dining highlights, and tips from our stay.

For those with a higher travel budget, Universal Helios Grand Hotel sits along Celestial Park’s edge. The luxury hotel has fine dining, a rooftop bar, and a dedicated entrance to Epic Universe.

Both hotels offer early park admission up to one hour before the park opens to the general public. However, paid park admission is required to enter Epic Universe.

Dark Universe Theme and Storyline

Darkmoor is the ficitional Gothic village in Dark Universe at Epic Universe in Orlando.

Although Epic Universe’s smallest land, Dark Universe, is the most unique. Here, we get to embrace our inner monsters. The Universal classic monsters land is set in the fictional village of Darkmoor, where Dr. Victoria Frankenstein continues her family’s experiments to control legendary monsters like the Wolf Man, the Mummy, and Dracula.

In our list of Epic Universe favorites, Dark Universe stands out as the best-themed world. Every detail, from the foggy cemetery to an open coffin and decaying village structures, contributes to the haunting atmosphere. Erie sounds fill the air, giving the land a spooky vibe.

Primary landmarks include Frankenstein Manor, a foreboding castle that emits electrical pulses and strange sounds, and the Burning Blade Tavern, which has a windmill that bursts into flames every 15 minutes.

Dark Universe Portal

The Dark Universe portal features a towering electrical coil emerging from dark rock and gnarled tree roots, perhaps symbolizing the struggle between science and death. Inscribed at the top is “It’s alive! It’s alive!” from the Frankenstein film. As you walk through the portal, electricity pulses, and the purple ceiling swirls. It perfectly sets the stage for the ominous village that awaits.

Dark Universe Rides

Dark Universe at Epic Universe features two rides.

Monsters Unchained

You have likely heard of the Frankenstein ride in Epic Universe. It is called Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment.

Monsters Unchained is undoubtedly one of the top Epic Universe attractions and one of the best rides we have experienced. Our family loved it.

The story revolves around Dr. Victoria Frankenstein, who tries to control all the monsters, but Dracula leads a revolt. You embark on a wild journey through the catacombs underneath Frankenstein Manor, encountering many iconic characters.

The ride uses a KUKA arm-controlled vehicle and seamlessly blends animatronics, immersive screens, and grand sets to create a multi-sensory experience you will never forget.

Everything is so well done, you can hardly tell the difference between the screens and the animatronic figures. Movements are sudden sometimes, and you are often on your back looking upward. But it is a blast.

Curse of the Werewolf

  • Minimum Height: 40″

The other Dark Universe ride is called Curse of the Werewolf. It is a fun roller coaster that races back and forth on the track as you try to avoid a pack of werewolves.

What makes the ride unique is that the seats spin. While I loved this feature, Julie did not. Our car faced backward nearly the entire ride, leaving her screaming, “I don’t like this! I don’t like this!”

While the ride is fun, it is short. If it has a wait time of an hour or more, I suggest trying to ride it later.

Dark Universe Food and Drinks

We enjoyed many foods and drinks throughout the park, but Dark Universe in Epic Universe featured some of our favorite items. The theming and immersive details in the restaurants are top-notch. Even if you do not eat or drink anything in this land, I encourage you to walk through the restaurants to see the level of detail. It genuinely whisks you away to another world.

Burning Blade Tavern

Monster memorabilia hangs on the walls behind the bar at the Burning Blade Tavern in Dark Universe at Epic Universe.

Topped with a burning windmill, the tavern is just as fun inside. You will discover monster memorabilia throughout the pub and possibly meet Monster Hunters. It offers indoor and outdoor seating, where you can enjoy bar bites with a drink. Guests can place mobile orders or order at the counter.

The tavern features handheld items like the Hunter’s Garlic Stake (garlic butter pretzel) and Burning Cheddar Bites (spicy cheddar bites). You can also order a burger, a loaded potato, or a grilled chicken skewer.

The tavern serves a few cocktails, beers, Strongbow Gold Apple Cider, and Darkthorne Mead.

We tried the Hunter’s Garlic Stake, a Reaper’s Reserve, and a Crossbow. The Hunter’s Garlic Stake had a crispy outer layer and was soft inside. Although it comes with a garlic dipping sauce, some of us found the pretzel garlicky enough without it. The snack was tasty and the theming was on point (pun intended). It will undoubtedly keep vampires at bay.

Reaper’s Reserve is the specialty beer designed for Dark Universe at Epic Universe. The brown ale has a slightly creamy finish and cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove notes.

While I love the autumnal flavors of the Reaper’s Reserve, my favorite Epic Universe drink across all five lands is the Crossbow. It is a secret menu item that you can order by name. The drink is a perfect blend of Darkthorne Mead and the Strongbow cider.

We did not ry the Monocane Mocktail, but we heard it is tasty. The drink comprises Sprite, emerald prism powder, and fruity syrups. You can order it with or without a souvenir beaker.

Das Stakehaus

Dark Universe’s primary restaurant is dimly lit and littered with spooky elements, from the chandeliers decorated with skulls and bats to the vampires hanging out on the walls. It looks like an old dining hall built over the ruins of ancient catacombs. In addition to the spooky atmosphere, the food is perfectly themed.

Das Stakehaus is a quick service restaurant with a simple ordering process. Find a seat, place your order on the park app, and scan the QR code on the table. A server will bring your food and drinks to you.

The dark-themed eatery serves entrees like the Das Burger, Blood Orange Chicken Sandwich, Carved Staked Steak, Darkmoor Black Wings, and a Forager Salad. It also features Stakes, or skewers of fish or chicken, served with sides of vegetables.

The deserts take the theming a step further. Although gross, the dishes are tasty and a lot of fun. Labotocotta is a Greek yogurt vanilla panna cotta brain covered in raspberry sauce. Red Velvet Death is a coffin-shaped cake with chocolate crumbs and puffed rice maggots.

We tried the Labottacotta while basking in the restaurant’s gloomy atmosphere. It looks disgusting but is delicious—the sweet and tart raspberry sauce pairs well with the light, creamy vanilla yogurt.

De Lacey’s Cottage

For a grab-and-go treat, De Lacey’s Cottage is the perfect quick-service snack shop. The counter-service shack offers an adorable Frank & Friends Pretzel and Warm Hearted Cinnamon Bites. You can pair your snack with a Coca-Cola Freestyle beverage, bottled water, or a Monster Energy Drink.

Dark Universe Characters

We encountered roaming characters and character meet-and-greet experiences during our Epic Universe preview. The Dark Universe characters often display dark humor, and the interactions are fantastic.

Monster Hunters hang out in the Burning Blade Tavern, happy to engage in conversations that often exhibit dark humor. The Invisible Man regularly hides in the shadows near the decaying structures. Ygor regularly walks through Darkmoor carrying a bag of body parts. A traveling musician plays ominous tunes and tells spooky tales in the town square.

The only meet-and-greet session during our sneak peek was with the Bride of Frankenstein and Frankenstein’s Monster. Interactions are lighthearted and fun, but seem longer than we usually experience at theme parks. It will be interesting to see if the park adds other characters to the meet-and-greet sessions.

Shopping and Other Experiences

Looking for souvenirs to preserve your vacation memories? The Epic Universe monster land has shops for your dark cravings.

The Manor Storehouse features monster-themed souvenirs, apparel, collectibles, toys, and candy. You will discover magical charms, hand-crafted jewelry, and colorful t-shirts at The Guild of Mystics. Head to Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities for ghastly relics.

Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience is one of the most unique Epic Universe attractions. Guests ages five and up can transform into werewolves or vampires with a monster makeover.

Atmosphere After Dark

Dark Universe is fun during the day, but the world is special at night. It takes on a more energetic but eerie vibe. The Burning Blade Tavern’s flames light up the dark sky. Dim lanterns illuminate the gloomy town square. Electricity surges occasionally from the portal and Frankenstein Manor. It is like a year-round Halloween attraction.

One of our biggest surprises when visiting Epic Universe was how beautiful all the lands are at night. Although we suggest visiting each land at night, the Gothic realm is one you do not want to miss.

Tips for Visiting Dark Universe

Visit the official Universal Orlando Resort site to verify park hours, ticket prices, and availability.

Dark Universe is fun, but some imagery may be too intense for young children.

Das Stakehaus has the most ghastly-themed food and atmosphere. Although delicious, some foods may look too disgusting for some people to eat. Also, some of the props in the restaurant may scare young children.

Download the Universal Orlando Resort app before your visit. We found it simple to use and helpful. You can use it to monitor ride wait times and place mobile food orders.

While walking through the Epic Universe monster land, keep your eyes open for roaming characters. You never know who will appear or when.

Monitor the ride wait times on the park app. Most people rank Monsters Unchained as one of the top three rides in Epic Universe. It is worth the wait.

While the Curse of the Werewolf is fun, I would not wait over an hour for a short ride.

Arriving in the land early may allow you to experience shorter wait times. Lines will likely build quickly through the late morning and afternoon since the Dark Universe rides are popular attractions.

Julie gets motion sick easily, so she was worried about both Dark Universe rides. Although Monsters Unchained has quick movements and flips you on your back, it did not upset her belly. However, the spinning cars on the Curse of the Werewolf caused some issues. You can watch our Epic Universe motion sickness guide video for more details.

Dark Universe is even more fun at night. Be sure to visit the land after dusk.

I am so glad a theme park has created a world focusing on our dark side. The Gothic realm is a breath of fresh air and a fun experience with its immersive details, cutting-edge attractions, and excellent food and drink options. Experiencing the atmosphere alone is worth the trip.

If you are a fan of monsters or immersive lands, Dark Universe is where Epic Universe gets delightfully dark.
