Mandan, North Dakota, quietly sits across the Missouri River from Bismarck, a city that prides itself on community and quality of life. Travelers often skip the charming town in favor of Bismarck or en route to other destinations. 

Mandan offers travelers a great deal of natural beauty and history. But its fun festivals showcase how special the place is. Here are eight family-friendly events that may make you want to become a Mandan resident.

Touch a Truck

Each year in mid-May, Mandan gives you an up close and personal experience with cars, trucks, and vehicles of all sizes.  The event is designed to help children get comfortable with machinery, covering everything from trucks and snowplows to cranes and buses. Imagine your kids’ smiles when they discover five blocks worth of giant machinery on wheels.

In June, 35,000 to 40,000 people visit Main Street to see hot rods and classic rides at one of Mandan’s most popular festivals. It is a dream event for car enthusiasts of all ages. Enjoy music from local bands and artists as you take a trip down memory lane, viewing the classic cars.

Mandan Rodeo Days

Experience the thrill of one of the world’s oldest and most famous rodeos. The event is part of the town’s big Fourth of July celebration and features bulls, broncs, and barrels of fun. North Dakota’s largest regular-season rodeo pays over $100,000 to winning cowboys. 

Mandan Independence Day Parade

A Fourth of July celebration is only complete with a parade. Mandan is passionate about our nation’s birthday, with Independence Day festivities dating back to 1881, nearly as old as the city. An annual tradition for many families, the parade is now North Dakota’s largest.

Initially created to promote local artists, Art in the Park has become a popular summer event that draws exhibitors and thousands of spectators from across North Dakota and neighboring states. You will discover plenty to do, from viewing various types of art to watching entertainers and savoring delicious food. It is part of the Fourth of July festivities.

The 5K run is a long-running tradition (pun intended) and the perfect way to kick off the Independence Day festivities. It is a fun activity for friends and family. Plus, you can feel proud that part of your registration fees go to the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation. 

Haunted Fort

Mandan houses the incredible Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, chock full of history and natural beauty. Each weekend in October, the park transforms into a legendary Halloween attraction featuring four unique haunted houses. Imagine how spooky reconstructed historic military buildings can be. The event has one less intense evening called “Spookless Night,” so younger children can enjoy it. No wonder Haunted Fort has become so popular for families.

Experience the magic of the holiday season as you stroll through a winter wonderland of dazzling lights. Get cozy around a firepit with family and friends while sipping hot cocoa and listening to holiday music. During the season of giving, you can also bring joy to a kid in need by donating to the local clothing and funding drive.

Other Things To Do in Mandan, North Dakota

Beyond its extraordinary community events, Mandan has lovely parks along the Missouri River. There are plenty of boutique shops, art galleries, excellent eateries, and local craft breweries. Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park and the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum are excellent choices if you enjoy history.

You can reach the underrated Theodore Roosevelt National Park by driving two hours to the west. For those who enjoy scenic drives with roadside attractions, check out the Enchanted Highway.

With so many attractions featuring outdoor recreation, history, and art, Mandan is an excellent place for families. Its festivals and events are icing on the cake.
